From our favorite apps, movies, and songs to the clothing on our backs, bits of code are the building blocks of our world.
Code Like A Girl is a course that gives young girls like you a place to freely express themselves through code and technology. We're a place where you can explore how things are made, and where you can learn to you build your own apps, games, animations, or anything else you can dream up.
We want you to know you don't have to be a rocket scientist to use code. Code is for all of us.
There are a lot of subjects on which you could spend your time learning, so what's so special about code? For one thing, it's powerful. Code is what lets billions of people connect through the internet. It's what gives Siri her voice and what gets you directions home on your Maps app.
Code is also fun. It's what makes your Angry Birds fly through the air and it's what streams your favorite music to your headphones. Code is all around us, so the more we know about it, the more we can use it to express ourselves in our increasingly technological world.
Even though being able to code is such an important skill, women are grossly underrepresented in Computer Science (CS) jobs in America. Girls earn 57% of all undergraduate college degrees, but only 18% of CS degrees. Only 0.4% of college freshmen girls even plan on majoring in CS.
If our society is becoming increasingly shaped by technology, and if that technology is being created mostly by males, then we're missing out on all the ideas and creations that could come from the 50% of the population that is female.
Code Like A Girl is a place where you can learn to create life-changing technology, not just consume it. Coding can help girls like you get better, higher paying jobs as adults, and it can give you a bigger voice in how our collective digital future is formed.
Really, what doesn't happen in the course?
We spend time hanging out and exploring how things around us are made with code. You'll learn how to animate your own illustrations, program your own smartphone apps, print your own 3D creations, and a work on a number of other projects that all begin with code (projects vary throughout the entire year).
You'll also occasionally hear from inspiring women who are using code alongside the things they are already passionate about, whether it's graphic design, fashion, music, or anything else.
